One Sentence for Each Rocker Type’s Best Use

Full rocker — steep, pitching faces like Jaws or Shipstern, where you need the nose up at the last second. Staged rocker — long, open faces such as Nazaré’s outer peaks, where you must generate speed from a late takeoff and carry it through a long wall. Variable rocker — the wildcard: good for waves that shift from steep to drawn-out inside ten seconds, but it demands a shaper who actually understands the foil transition, not someone who guesses. The tricky bit is that most factory boards labeled ‘variable rocker’ are just full rocker with a flattened section near the fins. Not the same thing. We fixed this on a 7’10” last season by asking the shaper to show us the planer profile on the bench — then we saw the dead spot. If you can't see it on the blank, don't order it.

Pick a Direction, Then Paddle Until Your Shoulders Burn

There is no perfect board. Every rocker choice trades hold for forgiveness; every foil choice trades paddle speed for control. The mistake is waiting for the ideal combo instead of picking one and learning its quirks. A buddy of mine bought a full-rocker gun for a reef slab that rarely gets steep enough to need it — he spent three sessions fighting to catch waves that a staged-rocket board would have swallowed. Meanwhile, another surfer on a too-flat board pearled on the same wave. Neither was wrong. They just had to commit. Your move: pick one mistake to prioritize avoiding — usually the one that matches the wave you surf most — and then paddle that board until the hold feels natural. Most teams skip this step. Then they buy another board. Don't be that guy.
